Kleinbard Successfully Represents All Boys Charter School in Obtaining a Charter

The Southwest Philadelphia Academy Charter High School for Boys was granted a charter by the Philadelphia School Reform Commission at its June 28th meeting. The school will be the first all-boys charter school in Pennsylvania. Kleinbard partners Michael A. Frattone, Steven Engelmyer and Eric Schreiner represented the school in face of opposition from several law groups, including the ACLU and the Women's Law Project, who had opposed the proposed school on the grounds that a single-sex charter school would violate the state and U.S. Constitutions. Southwest Philadelphia Academy for Boys Charter School will open in 2007, and will be a college preparatory high school that will serve qualified boys of diverse backgrounds who live in the City of Philadelphia. Southwest Academy will offer a rigorous college-prep curriculum modeled after the prestigious Boston Latin School.
